Teacher of the Week: Mr. D
Interview by Alexis McCracken
How many years have you been teaching?
What made you choose to teach after the Navy?
The teachers I had made me want to start teaching, and I had always wanted to be a teacher.
Why do you choose to work at Conway High School?
Conway hired me a long time ago, and I should stay at Conway since they hired me.
What college did you attend?
What are your likes and dislikes about teaching?
Likes- I like the kids, the ideas kids come up with, and how the students teach me everyday.
Dislikes- If I have a bad day.
What is your favorite Disney character and why?
It would have to be Tangled even though she has the string issue. We never say the H word in my class because I don’t have any (we use strings instead). Some people would describe me as Pinocchio because he is that little boy that has trouble growing. You can laugh, but I know who I am and that is okay.
What are your likes and dislikes about Conway High School?
Dislike- No dislikes
Likes- The kids, the students know me through their parents.
What are some of your hobbies?
Build legos, Going to miniature golf courses that have things to do with subjects that I like (such as Medieval Times and Pirates).
If you could be anyone besides Mr. D who would it be?
It would have to be Walt Disney because he had a imagination, he had a love of his own craft, he invented his own kind of industry, but he made it fun. Walt Disney has also brought so many people so much joy over the years.
Do you think dressing in costume helps your students learn the concepts better?
Yeah I do, even though sometimes dressing up is tough for me. I get really nervous, I can’t breathe, talk or move, but as soon as I think about what happened that evening I know that it worked.
