St. Patrick’s Day… A Sham?

By: Ny’Stacia Hechavarria

This year, no one seems to really care about St. Patrick’s Day. As the years pass by people seem to forget that it even exists. St. Patrick’s Day occurs every year on March 17th. At first it was strictly thought to be an Irish festival, but at the current time it’s celebrated all over the United States. On St Patrick’s Day it is customary to wear shamrocks, as well as green colored clothing and accessories. A person can even buy St. Patrick’s Day themed clothing from large retail chains.  St Patrick’s Day is not a legal holiday in the United States, but is nonetheless widely recognized as a “party” holiday. St Patrick’s Day celebrations have been openly criticized lately because of their association with public drunkenness and disorder.
